DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLACK SECT AND COMPASS SCHOOLS OF FENG SHUI
I hired a feng shui consultant that used the Compass to determine my areas, but a friend told me that the front door is always North. Which is right?

Black Sect Feng Shui uses your front door as North. Your front door, being considered the energetic "mouth" of your home, is then used to determine all the bagua areas within the home with the door as North. Black Sect is currently the most popular of the feng shui methods, and is generally the one you'll find many books and teachers ascribing to.

Compass School Feng Shui, as well as Wicca and other Earth based Wisdom systems, use the actual compass direction of North to determine North. As you might expect, you then use actual compss direction to determine bagua areas within your home.

There are other lesser known forms of feng shui such as the Xuan Kong Flying Stars method, in which life areas are in motion and therefore change regularly.

Since I come from a more pagan background, I have always used actual magnetic North for my own directional work, therefore I lean more toward the Compass school of feng shui. However, many people have been extremely sucessful using other feng shui methods.

Of course, your choice of which method to use for determining your areas rests ultimately with you!

BAGUAS: CONVEX AND CONCAVE

Help! I've placed a bagua with a concave mirror outside my home, but now I read that these can have very bad results, and can repel good energy too. I'm confused!

Baguas are available in many styles:brass, reflective mirrored glass with center mirrors, wood with metal reflectors, and wood with actual mirrors. If you are not sure of placement, we recommend beginning with a simple bagua, not one with convex or concave mirrors. The traditional placement is above the front entrance door to the house. Placing your bagua with loving intent is all that is necessary to activate bagua energy.

In a Feng Shui Bagua with either a convex or concave mirror, specific placement depends upon the qualities of the mirror.

Concave mirrors bow inward, attracting and magnifying positive energy. We would want to place these in a beautiful location, such as facing a flower garden or lovely natural landscape. If you own a retail store, concave mirrors are often used to attract business and customers. Think of this shape as a container and magnifier of good chi.

Convex mirrors curve outward and will not hold the energy that comes their way - rather they repel undesirable chi or objects that are reflected in them. This is similar to a protection spell in Wicca, where any negativity is simply reflected back to its source; any negativity simply bounces off. Thus baguas with convex mirrors can be used to repel such things as chaos from a busy street, corners of buildings which point directly at your home (poisen arrows), disruptive neighbors, etc.

BAGUA COLORS
I would like to place a bagua mirror over my front door, but don't like the colors of the wood version I found in a local store (yellow, black and red).
Can I paint the wood (not the mirror!) to match my door frame? Is this detrimental at all?
Jamie, an artist

Dear Jamie,
The bagua is a protection cure, and can be thought of as the circle of life, each side being a direction, representing a life area. The trigrams found on each side enhance the protection of each life area. Thus the bagua represents a protection of all these areas, and is usually hung at the entrance of your home. The mirror reflects negative energies away from your house.

Baguas traditionally come in the yellow-red-black or red/green colors due to the protection and health giving properties of the colors. That said, it is my feeling that you should resonate with your feng shui cures for them to be most effective. What to do?

Before painting, consider the vibration of the original colors of your bagua:
Red represents Chi, passion, energy, protection. It's considered the most active color. Black represents power and authority.
Yellow, and the whole family of earth tones, represent health, groundedness, connection and the earth.
You may want to incorporate these traditional colors subtly into your new bagua color scheme - in the form of a tiny pattern around the outside, for example. In this way the energetic properties of the colors are still represented, yet your bagua won't clash with your house. Or, simply use variations of the colors that bring you joy. As an artist, I'm sure you have wonderful ideas!

In this way your bagua will not only be a protection, but an energetic boost for you each time you see it. :)

MISSING WEALTH AREA
I happened upon your site by accident, but I am glad I did. My husband and I purchased an old house that was neglected by its previous owner...We hired a contractor to do the renovations and in the process put an addition...the man overcharged us by $100,000 and never finished the job -- and what he did do needed to be ripped out and redone.
The long and the short of it, we are in a financial choke hold... In my research of FS, I discovered that with the addition, we put the house out of balance and what is missing is the wealth area. I looked into how to balance it, but we need more money to do it. We don't have any more and we are borrowed to the limit. I bought a little frog with a coin in his mouth to try to help the finance situation. Can you help me with placement and some other serious cures?

You'll be happy to know that there are several very effective and simple things you can do to heal your house's chi. You mentioned that you are now missing the wealth area of your home. When a house is missing an area, you can perform cures both inside and outside the house that will energetically "create" the missing area.

On the outside of your home, locate the place where the corner would be if the area were "complete" and place a cure there. One nice way is to plant a healthy vibrant tree or bush at that corner spot. Or fill in the area with flowers, especially purple and red ones. (The colors green and purple symbolize wealth, and red is the most "chi" generating color.) Another outside cure would be to place a bright light aimed toward your house on that same corner, or even a flagpole. Even a large stone or statue will work -- what you're doing is bringing energy into the wealth area.

Inside, you can place mirrors, wind chimes, hanging crystals and house plants along the two walls of the missing area. To avoid spending a lot of money, you can probably create quite a lovely display using existing mirrors and houseplants - again, you are bringing energy in to the wealth area where it is structurally lacking. By keeping in mind that you want to add light, sound and life (thus the mirrors, crystals, chimes, and plants) to an area, you will get a good sense of how these elements generate and attract more "chi".

Also remember that you can also place cures in each room of the house, in the wealth area of the particular room. Thus, in addition to using cures to create the missing house wealth area, you are also boosting your wealth chi by adding cures throughout your home.

Your little money frog can be placed in the wealth area of any room, particularly if there is a room where you do your financial books, etc. Or, some people place frogs near their front door to attract money. Remember the lore of the money frog is that he appears when a positive change of fortune is about to take place!

I hope this information is helpful -- and you are able to use it to cure your house and fall in love with it again!

MISSING LOVE AREA
I need help -Will you tell me what cures I can use for a missing love corner?
Thank you.

Your situation is similar to the missing wealth area (see above). Whenever a house is missing an area, you can perform cures both inside and outside the house that will energetically "create" the missing area. In your situation, you will want to place cures and symbols of love along the two walls of the missing love corner.

A fabulous love cure is the Kwan Yin Temple Plaque, which carries multiple designs with an interwoven theme of love and compassion. In fact, anything with Kwan Yin, such as the Kwan Yin Bells would be excellent love area cures, as Kwan Yin is the Goddess of Love and Compassion. Crystals will add necessary energy to the area, and I would especially add crystal hearts to symbolize love while the crystal adds chi. Place a lovely mirror on one of the walls, and perhaps artwork or stuatuary showing loving situations or couples.

If your home has a yard, plant a pair of healthy, vigerous plants directly outside the love area, creating and magnifying the love energy by using the yard as a vibrational part of the house. By planting pairs of plants and flowers, you are symbolizing the unity of love. Also wonderful are wind chimes (choose the dragon or yin yang metal chimes for outside use). Chimes create chi whenever they play, and are a lovely addition to the yard. You could also use a table chime inside for the same reason.

If you feel you would like to do more, you might use a ritual love blessing kit in the missing love area of your home to boost the flow of chi. And remember, you can add crystals and other cures throughout your house, in the love area of each room, to strengthen the energy of love. Little heart crystals are an unobtrusive way to do this.

Best Wishes to You in creating the balance and abundant love that you deserve!

ENERGIZING WEALTH AREA WITH SUBTLE WICCAN STYLE TECHNIQUES
My family is not open to my spiritual direction, (They are uncomfortable with unconventional ideas such as feng shui , wicca, or or new age) yet I'd like to enhance my wealth area. What can I do to bless my prosperity area that will be subtle and not too "out-there" seeming, so as not to upset my family?

In Earth based wisdom, such as wicca and feng shui, North is the direction of wealth and prosperity. The easiest and most subtle way to add energy to your wealth area is to place at least one healthy vibrant house plant in the north portion of your home, and/or the north area of each room. As the plant grows, your prosperity increases. Keep this plant healthy, trim off dead leaves and care for it - you'll be amazed at the energetic change from simply mindfully placing and caring for your plant(s).

A painting of a healthy forest or other earth scene is also perfect for placement in the North. If you have a change jar, keep this in the North also. (To enhance the aspect of money increasing, add a small green crystal or stone such as malachite or jade along with your coins).

Any green crystals or stones, such as adventurine, jade, green bloodstone, or peridot are also wonderful for placement in the North for prosperity and health. Green hanging crystals are great for this, as are longdrops. While hanging crystals may be too "obvious" for your use, a decorative figurine, box, or other item made of or decorated with such crystals and precious stones can be a subtle way to add their energy without disturbing people with a more conventional mindset.

Apply this simple but powerful blessing for your yard: the ancient Centic people recommended planting a pine tree in the north, representing good fortune, forsight, and new beginnnings. Consider planting at least one pine surrounded by colorful flowers or vibrant bushes. Again, as you mindfully care for your plants, you will realize blessings without making your family uncomfortable.

CHINESE COINS AND WEALTH
My finances are a mess, and I've heard that chinese coins can help. Where should I put them? Would they need a special container? What else is good to attract money?
thanks, Cherie

Dear Cherie,
Chinese coins, or feng shui coins, represent abundance, and are usually marked with symbols of prosperity and good fortune. Besides they obvious symbolism of coins, the Chinese feng shui round coin with the squared hole represents the union of earth with heavens. Thus this type of coin is even more powerful a symbol or amulet than our own national coins. Chinese coins come in a variety of shapes and sizes - use the ones that strike your fancy!

People like to use Chinese coins in variety of ways:

*Bury three (or multiples of three) coins in your potted plants, especially in the wealth areas of your house.
*Three coins tied together with red ribbon can be kept in your purse, or where you do your financial books to increase and attract money.
*If you have a business, keep a few coins tied with red ribbon in your cash register.
*Chinese red envelopes (or money envelopes) can also be used to hold a few coins and placed in drawers, atop door frames, etc.
You could also place a cute little "money frog" in the wealth area of your home. Tradition is that they appear at a home just before good fortune arrives. Many people love these because they are so mythical and fanciful -- and finances can sometimes become such a heavy energy that the addition of a bit of whimsey is the perfect thing! Trust your intuition - whatever resonates best with you will be most effective. Some people really like the oversized coins for oversized financial issues. :)

You might also try the addition of crystals, and/or anything red to activate your financial area: red lanterns, envelopes, or twin chi tubes on red cord. If you are unfamiliar with self blessings or spells, you might try a simple Ritual of Prosperity kit.

WHAT ARE FLUTE OR BAMBOO CHI TUBES USED FOR IN FENG SHUI?
A friend recommended I get bamboo flutes or tubes for the bad chi in my house. What are feng shui flutes or bamboo tubes used for and why?

Feng shui consultants use a lot of flutes and or chi tubes, as they are considered one of the most powerful feng shui cures available. In feng shui, bamboo represents strength, endurance and power. It's a very rapid growing plant - abundant in chi energy. As the root and nodes generate the chi for the plant, they bring the same energizing properties to items made from them. Flutes and hollow chi tubes have a long tradition in feng shui, delivering a message of peace, safety, strength, healing and power.

BEAMS AND BAMBOO FLUTES CHI TUBES/WICCAN INVISIBILE BEAM SPELL
I have big exposed beams in my house. Will bamboo flutes or chi tubes cure the negative effect? Are there spells or blessings for this?

You can do both!

In Feng Shui, exposed beams are considered to be an oppressive force in any room where they are found, as they are said to generate electromagnetic fields that can disrupt your own energies. You may sense this disruption as a vague discomfort and tension when you spend time in the room.

If you feel that the beams in your home are impacting your energies, a "flute cure" utilizing one flute or a pair of twin chi tubes at each end of the beam is the traditional cure. Remember, though, that part of the flute cure is your own intention to change the energies in your space. Hang your cures with focused intent, and be sensitive to the energies and the way areas of your home impact your emotions before and after the addition of your flutes or tubes. Adding a tall houseplant or two will definitely help - even artwork depicting the sky or upward movement can help you change the effect of the beams.

You may also wish to simply move beds, chairs, couches and tables if they are directly beneath the beam. This often will make a big difference!

In Wicca, beams are considered partial walls, and thus can "wall-off" the flow of energy, causing discomfort and potential strife. There is a simple Wiccan spell to make your beams energetically "disappear". This also works for ceiling fans, which can "cut up" energy within your home, causing strife and possibly ill health. It's a simple but effetive spell, presented for your customization:

Choose a night at new (dark) moon. (The moon is "invisible" at this time, and this is also your goal - to make your beams energetically "invisible".)

You'll need

  1. a ladder to reach the beam and/or ceiling fan,
  2. a wand or Athame
  3. either incense, sage smudge stick, or herbs (mistletoe, poppyseeds, chicory, etc) and charcoal for burning them.

Center and ground yourself, and create a sacred circle space in which to place your ladder. (You may call upon dieties, The Great Spirit, or the Guardians of the East and of the Air, or simply use your energy as part of the Universe - whichever fits your current belief system.) Using the ladder, saturate the beam or fan with smoke, speaking a blessing that the structure remains true while its influence upon the energy of the room becomes completely neutral and invisible. Play with cadence, make it rhyme if you wish - just speak knowing that words are power. Then touch the beam or fan with your wand or athame to complete the ritual, saying something like "it is done, so mote it be". Finally, in gratitude and love, end your ritual, thanking any energies or dieties you may have chosen to invoke. Viola! That's it.

ATTRACTING LOVE
How can I attract the right love for me? Are there spells or feng shui things I can do?

Ah, attracting love! Probably one of humankind's oldest questions...There are indeed simple Feng Shui cures and Wiccan spells that can help in attracting the right person at the right time.

A Feng Shui love cure: Determine your love area in your house and add energy to it - plants, crystals (pink and red especially) or heart shaped crystals, and decorate the area in pairs (a pair of candlesticks for example). Add a beautiful wall mirror, and possibly artwork depicting happy couples. These cures can be used alone or in combination with rituals.

Wiccan/Pagan Simple Ritual:This self blessing can be as simple or as complex as you would like it to be. To begin, very consciously wash your hands, imagining that any self doubt, self sabotage, or unconscious feelings of being un-loveable are washed away. Feel the water renew you, rinsing away all false feelings and restoring your beautiful Universal birthright. You ARE love! Therefore you attract love - as like attracts like. If you are a novice at self blessings and spells, you may wish to use a simple Ritual of Love Kit. Self blessings become very natural and effortless over time - as natural as bathing!

Depending upon where you are on your personal path, you may choose many other aspects to your ritual, from ceremonially dropping flowers leading to your door to wearing a love amulet, to using a wand to create a sacred circle and calling love from the four directions. You can use candles, essential oils, and crystals. There are so many love spells, and so many aspects of self love to address, that we are adding an article about this in our article section. Look for it soon!

BEDROOM FENG SHUI -CORRECTING EFFECTS OF MIRROR
In my daughter's bedroom we have a wall to wall ceiling high mirrored built in robe. I was told that this wasn't good Feng Shui, because it allows negative energy into the bedroom. Is this true, and if so what can I do to solve this problem?

Thank you for your question! It is true that mirrors are not recommended for the bedroom, but not necessarily due to negative energy. The issue is that mirrors magnify chi and tend to energize a room, therefore they do not contribute to a relaxing sleep atmosphere. A pretty curtain (even sheer or lace) to draw over the mirror at bedtime should counteract the energizing effect and encourage a more restive space for sleeping. Best of Chi to You!

BATHROOM CURES
We just bought a home and since we have lived there, we have drained our savings account. I believe it is because the furthest left hand corner in our house is a bathroom. Is it true that we could be flushing our money down the toilet? If so, I have been told that by hanging bamboo flutes in my bathroom, this will offset the negative energy.

According to feng shui, toilets tend to "flush away" chi..and the location of your bathroom could certainly be considered detrimental. Many feng shui consultants do recommend hanging flutes or chi tubes in the bathroom to counteract the draining effect.
Bamboo chi tubes or flutes are a positive force, increasing chi in the areas they are placed.

There are also several easy ways to improve the energy in your bathroom. for example, simply keeping the toilet lid down when not in use is a simple yet quite effective way to cut down on the draining energy of the toilet. Always keep the door shut. Your bathroom should feel rather like a sanctuary, calming and inviting. Be sure to keep the mirrors clean, as well as your sink and toilet. This will help improve the energy in your bathroom.

A full length mirror or bagua on the outside of your bathroom door (with the door shut) could also help with directing the financial energy away from that room (where it tends to drain away), back into the rest of the house.

***

We just moved into a new apartament and everything is great - except our bathroom. The bathroom door faces the front door, so all the energy that enters the house seems to go directy into the bathroom and out the toilet. I thought that keeping the lid down and the door closed would take care of this, but the quality of life has still greatly diminished since we got settled. The bathroom is situated in the southwest position, and since that's not an ideal position either I've placed some metal elements as recomended by my feng shui consultant. But, it seems to have little influence. I cannot find any beneficial assistance on how to resolve this, and we cannot move at the moment. Hopefuly, you have some advice on what to do.

You are already doing some of the main things for a bathroom, such as keeping the toilet lid down and the door closed. One additional simple thing that can be quite effective is to place a full length mirror on the outside of the bathroom door. This should re-direct the energy much more efficiently than the door by itself, as the chi will "bounce" off the mirror back into the rest of the house.

I would also place a few hanging crystals and mirrors depending upon your house's layout. This will help diffuse the energy throughout the house. How to know where to place them? Imagine the energy entering the front door, and now bouncing off the mirror. Does it hit a wall? If so, hang a crystal in that area. Follow the energy and place either crystals or mirrors wherever it will get "stuck" - against a wall, in dark corners, etc.

***

BAMBOO CHI TUBE IN BATHROOM
I want to place some bamboo chi tubes in my bathroom. Should I hang the chi tubes directly above the toilet? Also, does it matter which direction I hang them?

I think you should trust your own feelings on where to hang your chi tubes, although they are small enough to go over a toilet. One obvious thing that many people forget: be sure to keep the toilet lid down -- this will help greatly to keep good energy from "flushing" away.

Remember, feng shui is about energy, and you will want to enjoy the appearance of your chosen cure in your bathroom. And be sure to take note of what area of your house the bathroom resides in.

BLESSING OR CURSE?
My fiance and I just moved into a new house (which we are renting). The owner had not been back to the area in 10 years, so since she was in town she came by to check up on her houses. She is Vietnamese and asked if she could bless the house quickly. She then proceeded to hang a small hand mirror over the inside of the front door facing towards the living room. She also buried a few tubes in the yard, but I don't know what was in them. My mother seems to think it is a curse but I don't think so. We had just started moving in that day, so there is really no reason for the owner to dislike us. Also, the building contractor that was with her said she did the same thing to each property. Is this a feng shui blessing? Can I remove the mirror and replace it with a regular one that I already own? Any input/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Thank you for your question! The mirror that your landlady placed over the door sounds like a variation of a feng shui bagua cure. Although in Chinese feng shui, baguas are usually hung outside the front door, there are several cultural variants used worldwide. Bagua mirrors are used to bless a home and its inhabitants, and to repel negative or disruptive energy from entering. I see no reason why you couldn't simply hang an attractive bagua outside over your front door and remove the hand mirror if you so desire.

As for the tubes, I suspect that items within them were placed also as a blessing or for good luck. The homeowner is probably blessing all her properties for continued prosperity and good luck. Items commonly buried on property include coins or other representations of wealth, such as "gold" ingots or even money frogs. She may have included items of protection, such as fu dogs, beasts, or dragons. You may wish to add to the positive by placing a cute little money frog in your home for prosperity, or a lovely brass dragon or beast facing your door for protection.

MUST YOU USE SPECIAL BLESSED ITEMS?
I've recently had a Feng Shui reading, and was told that I need two bamboo flutes above the cash registers at my business. The consultant told me that they had to be from China Town in San Francisco and that they were $65 a piece. Well I have seven registers! Though I'm a believer in feng shui, I think she's a sales person. I'm a savvy business woman, looking for balance - isn't that what feng shui is all about?

I am saddened to say that we get comments like this one all the time: people are told that they must purchase specific items from a special store or said to be blessed by a special person, etc.

You are absolutely correct -- feng shui is about balance and energy. A bamboo flute or chi tubes are prized for their energetic properties. It is the fact that its made from genuine bamboo (as the plant itself is considered extremely high in chi and good fortune) that gives it its importance in feng shui.

Unless you strongly feel that you require a flute specifically blessed by a specific feng shui master, you can feel confident in choosing a cure that is less expensive. Trust yourself and be your own master or guru!

I personally don't believe the store in which you purchase your cure is of as much importance as the energy you put into the cure as you place it - although it does seem to me that the vibration of the person who created the item could certainly be a valid concern. Yet a feng shui cure, like all ritual objects, can be cleansed, blessed and energized by you.

Trust your intuition on this one...you may not need that many cures at all. Depending upon the energies you are wishing to balance, you could combine a pair or two of chi tubes with other specific (and less costly) cures: chinese coins, a bamboo plant, money frog, lucky cat, etc. Good Fortune to you!
